Hi everybody ?
We continue to discover for you. Our container house on today’s tour is from Australia.
While visiting the Margaret River Region of Western Australia (a few hours South of Perth) you can also find The Kaloorup Shipping Container House recently completed by Steve Hick.
Steve’s interest and curiosity in Shipping Container Homes was originally inspired by a visit to the Devil’s Corner Winery Cellar Door while he was vacationing in Tasmania.
Steve was initially curious about what you could do with shipping containers.
After a lot of research, Steve believed that he could do something similar as a “weekender” or holiday rental on his semi-rural property in Kaloorup WA.
As a result, a plan evolved for The Kaloorup Shipping Container House. Its completion two years later speaks volumes about Steve Hicks’ tenacity, ability, creativity and resourcefulness. The Kaloorup Shipping Container House is located in the Margaret River area of Western Australia. A total of 9 x 40ft containers were used for the build, along with a large amount of recycled and re-purposed materials. It took Steve just over two years to complete.
Recycling and re purposing was important to Steve. As such, Steve sourced discarded building materials, light fittings and glass from “verge clean ups” and land fill, and then incorporated them into his build.
The exterior cladding is made from Jarrah (a native hardwood) that was salvaged from demolished houses. Recycled aluminium sheeting saved from landfill was also used to clad the containers
According to Steve, “House engineering, design, council approval and construction were all pretty straight forward. Our biggest challenge was meeting the 6 Star energy rating compliance on new builds.”
This was accomplished using some recycled double glazed glass panels and some quality insulation.
