This garden project focused on transforming an impersonal outdoor space into a series of intimate garden “rooms,” integrating both practical and aesthetic features.
The design was a collaborative effort, prioritizing the client’s needs and preferences, including a pool area, low-maintenance plants, privacy solutions, and recreational options.
The outcome is a serene and functional retreat that doubles as a cottage-like escape for the homeowners.

Garden Transformation
The initial garden space was a blank slate, open for development. The primary goal was to create a series of intimate spaces within the garden, moving away from its original open and impersonal setup.
A key element was the integration of a pool, which required some compromises, such as reducing the size of the proposed patio to fit the pool into the desired space.
The use of man-made stones was favored in the design, providing a structured yet flexible foundation for the garden’s transformation.
Design Strategies
Focusing on aesthetics and practicality, the landscaping around the pool was meticulously planned. Man-made stones were used in a running bond pattern, and soft landscaping was introduced to break up the hard surfaces and create a more natural look.
Plants were strategically placed to grow right up to the pool’s edge, softening the space’s overall appearance.
In addressing privacy concerns, the design incorporated tall, columnar trees to align with zoning restrictions on fence heights without compromising on privacy.
Garden Features
The garden’s design incorporates several key features that enhance both its functionality and visual appeal. Low-maintenance ornamental grasses were chosen, which require minimal effort as they only need trimming in the spring while maintaining their beauty throughout winter.
The garden’s structure is bolstered by a prominent conical grass and an evergreen yew hedge, providing year-round greenery and color.
A beech hedge further enhances the garden’s aesthetic charm. A notable feature is the destination nook, located near the pool, which the client actively helped design.
This area includes a shipping container outfitted with a TV, bar, and fire feature, creating a cozy and inviting space for outdoor leisure and socializing, with the fire serving as a visual anchor across the pool.
Serene Oasis
Designed approximately four years ago, the garden serves as a tranquil oasis for the homeowners, offering a cottage-like experience within their backyard.
This setup provides a calming retreat, allowing the homeowners to enjoy relaxation and serenity without needing to travel to a remote location.
The thoughtfully designed layout and features of the garden contribute to this peaceful atmosphere, making it a cherished space for the clients.
